Mr. A.V. Nunley, 87, of Martin died Friday, March 7, 2014, at Martin Health Care. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Old Fulton Church of Christ with Bro. Nathaniel Holmes officiating. Interment will follow in Parham Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Abraham Van Nunley was born on November 12, 1926, to Robert “RF” and Adell Nunley in Martin, Tennessee. He shared his birth date with his triplets and was one of nine siblings.
After serving in the Army, he went to Huntsville, Alabama where he met and married his wife of fifty-two years, Jo Ann Douglas. To this union, four children were born: Dorethea, Robert, Larry and Luwanna.
AV spent his days working as a carpenter, a vocation for which he was formally trained at West Kentucky Vocational School in Paducah, Kentucky. He commuted for many years back and forth from Martin to Carbondale, Illinois in order to provide a better life for his family. He taught them the value of hard work and dedication through this impeccable work ethic.
His work ethic never showed more than through his service to the Church. This amazing father taught his children, by example, that the most important thing in life is to love and serve God and he demonstrated this love and service through everything he did until he was physically unable.
We all know: AV never met a stranger; he loved to bowl; he never turned down and opportunity to spend quality time with his family (especially if travel was involved); he never hesitated to preach the truth through love; he seized every opportunity to teach and to assemble with the Saints; that he was one of the trio of oldest living triplets in the state of Tennessee and he never, ever missed and opening to tease and to put a smile on the faces of all those he encountered. As we celebrate AV’s “home going”, we should all take to heart the words he left his children: “Do not grieve for me as for those who have no hope, I have been called up to my savior in the sky.”AV leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Dorethea (Dean) Brooks, sons, Robert (Alexis) and Larry (Patricia), daughter, Luwanna Nunley and honorary daughter, Stephanie (Maurice) Stone along with granddaughters: Destiny, Ryann, Heaven, Trinity and Serenity. He also leaves siblings, RC, Mable, Hoover and Josie. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jo Ann and siblings, Stafford, Robbie “Ozzie”, Arista and Lloyd.
