Mr. Charles Cletus Tharpe, 68, of Paris died Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at AHC Paris.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Rawls Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
He was born on April 27, 1951 to the late Charles N. Tharpe and Mary Elizabeth Cowan in Paris, Tennessee.
Cletus was a legendary figure of Paris, Henry County. He could be seen often walking the streets, attending various churches with Nellie Bass, working the parking lot and door at the Bennett-Freeman American Legion, umpiring at Johnson Park, riding “patrol” with Charles Kendall, working at the Center with Sam Warren or just sitting at the Henry County Courthouse with the “courthouse crew” or holding court on Williams Street with the neighborhood children or running with Don (Rachel) McDaniel.
He worked as a laborer at Emerson, Gaines, Replogle Lumber Yard. He was a member of Allen Chapel Church where he worshipped until his health failed. He was educated in the Henry County school system attending Central High.
Cletus was preceded in death by his parents and brothers; Robert Cowan , Arthur Tharpe , Harold Tharpe, and sister; Joann Tharpe.
He is survived by his brothers; William “Cookie” (Bobbie) Tharpe, Terry Tharpe, Rodney (Charlie) Tharpe all of Paris, TN, Steve (Diane) Tharpe of Louisville, KY, daughter; Brianna Howard, uncle; Melvin (Margo) Morris of Cincinnati, Ohio, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
