On August 15, 1932, in Martin, TN, RF and Adell Nunley became parents to their fifth son and eighth child, Hoover Gene Nunley. His mother was loving and kind, with the tremendous gift of hospitality. His father was a respected and well known minister who traveled throughout the country preaching the Gospel. It was through RF Nunley’s example that Hoover and his brothers learned to be strong Christian men, husbands and fathers, each becoming respected church leaders. Hoover was a cornerstone at the Palace Street Church of Christ which later moved to Old Fulton Road.

While growing up he enjoyed playing football, spending time with his friends and working the farm with his father. Hoover attended and graduated from Weakley County High School in Martin.

When Hoover was about 24 years old, Josephine Nash visited the Nunley home while touring with the Southwestern Christian College Chorus. She stole his heart and he traveled to and from Cotton Plant, Arkansas for nearly a year before convincing her to marry him. Josephine died, at age 33, leaving him to raise their three young children. Hoover later married Ella Hart and the family grew to five children.

While working the family farm with his father, he began to love what he did and quickly realized that farming was what he wanted to do. Hoover went on to become a successful farmer, enjoying walking the fields, raising cattle and tilling the soil. This is where he was most at peace. During the lean years of farming, he and his brothers, AV and RC, opened Nunley’s New and Used Furniture. This business became the social “hot spot” of downtown Martin. Hoover was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Stafford, Arista, Robbie Olza, Lloyd, Robert Casper (RC), Abraham Van (AV), wives Josephine and Ella and son, Hoover Gene, Jr. His two surviving siblings are his younger sister, Josie Ray and older sister Mable Lee. Hoover is also survived by his children, Joann (Gene), Sheila (Tally), Ronald (Diedra), Donald; grandchildren, Geno, Russell, Aimee, April, Marques, Porsha, Quentin, LaTosha and LeMoyne, great grandchildren, family and friends.
