Horace Hillsman

Mr. Horace Hillsman, 78, of Union City died Saturday, March 2, 2024, at his home. Services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at New Reedy Creek Missionary Baptist Church in McLemoresville, TN. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024, at McPhearson-Rawls Funeral Home and from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the church. He was born on December 11, 1945, in McLemoresville, TN. He was the youngest of 12 siblings born to Virdell and Tanzy Hillsman. His father and mother, one daughter (Summer Hillsman), a stepson (Justin Davis), and seven siblings (Lincoln Hillsman, Carzell Hillsman, Lotee Hillsman, R. C. Hillsman, Marvill Hunt, Irene Price, Laura Duke) preceded him in death. Horace accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Reedy Creek Baptist Church in McLemoresville, TN, under the pastorate of Rev. R. F. Johnson. He later joined Garfield Baptist Church in Chicago under the pastorate of Rev. G. F. Powell, where he was a member of the Treadwell Community Singers. After his military service, he became a member of Christ Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chicago, IL under the pastorate of Rev. Milton Bronson, where he was a very active member. He graduated from Webb High School in McKenzie, TN in 1963 and shortly thereafter, he moved to Chicago, IL. Two years later in 1965 he was inducted into the United States Army where he reached the rank of SP4. He did a year's tour of duty in Vietnam. He was released from active duty with an honorable discharge in December of 1967. Upon release from active duty, Horace went back to Chicago, Illinois and went to work. He later attended and graduated from Coyne Electrical School and worked for three electrical contractors. He was a natural to the electrical field and was regularly acclaimed as an "top notch" electrician. Horace was married to Donna Dorsey in 1972. To that union two children, whom he cherished, were born, Summer and Staci Hillsman Washington. He moved back to McLemoresville, TN in September 2001, where he worked for a local electrical contractor. Horace reunited with New Reedy Creek Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Kenneth J. Hillsman, Sr. In December 2006 he married Kaye Davis, who later convinced him to move to Union City, TN and faithfully stood by him during his long illness. Horace was a bright individual who enjoyed spending time with family and friends and making people laugh. He was an avid darts player who always looked for someone to challenge. He enjoyed playing the keyboard for anyone who would listen, on the phone or in person. He also enjoyed working outside and could be counted on to keep his yard and shrubbery neatly trimmed. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Kaye, one daughter, Staci Washington (David) a stepdaughter Bridgette Davis; one stepson Timothy Davis, three grandchildren (lndya Washington, lsaish Washington, Jason Pennywell II), seven step granddaughters 1 step-grandson; three brothers: Daniel Hillsman, Judson Hillsman, William Hillsman (Betty) and one sister, Joyce Pate; sister-in-law, Juanetta Hillsman, Brother in-law Danny Bowers(Linda) Step-Mother-in-law Doretha Bowers, two stepbrothers in-law and two stepsisters-in law, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He also leaves his special friend Shirley Green Foulks. And his beloved dog, King. McPhearson-Rawls Funeral Home - Union City 731-885-8110
