Mr. Jerry Wayne "Phelps" Carter, 67, of Union City died Wednesday, September 16, 2021, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2021, at Rawls Funeral Home Chapel.

Jerry Wayne Carter was born September 24, 1953 to the late Kattie Lee Carter Phelps and Earl Norman, Sr.

He was a 1971 graduate of Union City High School. He was a longtime employee of Dana Corporation until his health issues caused him to retire. He attended New Hope Freewill Baptist Church when his health allowed him to do so. He was also a devoted member of AA & NA where he assisted in teaching and helping other members as well as himself to become better individuals.

He leaves to cherish his memory: three children, Rhyshun Beard of Brownsville, TN, Jennifer Alford of Fulton, KY, and LaQuasha Wheeler of Union City, TN; one grandson, Josiah Alford of Fulton, KY; four granddaughters, Jenesis Ingram of Fulton, KY, Alana, Addyson and Aryzanna Wheeler all of Union City, TN; eight brothers, Greg (Birdie) Phelps of Union City, TN, Michael Shane (Jackie) Phelps of Martin, TN, Terry (Teresa) Phelps of Union City, TN, Elmer Joe (Joycine) Phelps of Martin, TN, Earl Sr. (Colette) Norman of Waynesboro, MS, Bobby (Timeca) Norman of Chicago, IL, Dale (Joan) Norman of MI, and Glenn Silinzy of St. Louis, MO; three sisters, Ruth Miller of Union City, TN, Sandra (Wendell) Edwards of Dayton, OH, and Debra Shum of St. Louis, MO; five close nephews, Byron Phelps of Martin, TN, Untwon Bishop of Jackson, TN, Greg Phelps, Jr. of Tallahassee, FL, Terae Phelps of Union City, TN, and Marcell McElrath of Union City, TN; four close nieces, Michelle Phelps of Union City, TN, Myra Phelps of Union City, TN, Yolanda Phelps Dysart of Union City, TN, and Daneshia McElrath of Union City, TN; his devoted ex-wife, Shirley Carter, that still remained active in his life before and during his illness; and a host of nieces and nephews from MI, IL, MS, OH, and MO, as well as a host of close great nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
