Nellie Elizabeth Bass was born on April 14, 1939 in Paris, Tennessee to Samuel and Nellie Warren. She graduated from Central High School in Paris in 1957 and then attended Tennessee State University and Murray State University. While in the sixth grade she met the Love of her life and her future husband, George Bass Jr. and they were married in 1961. The couple cared for and raised two children – Jacque Bass and Dominque Darcus.
Nellie believed in education and she worked for several schools in Paris and served as an educator for over thirty years. Even after retiring from teaching full time, Nellie continued as a substitute teacher throughout the Paris Special School District.
Nellie Loved her family, friends, turnip greens and chittlins but she Loved the Lord first and foremost. Nellie dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age. Nellie was a member of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Paris where she served as the church pianist for over sixty years. Nellie had a God given gift for music and playing the piano. Nellie did not read sheet music, she was self taught and she played solely by ear. Nellie shared her gift of music with everyone in Paris and Henry County by serving as the pianist for several churches over the years. Nellie was a Strong alto and she used that voice at various churches all over Paris and with the singing group the Allenaires.
Nellie leaves behind a large family to grieve her loss. Nellie is survived by her former husband of 30 years, George Bass Jr. of Paris. Her children Jacque Bass of Avon, Indiana, Dominque Darcus (Charles) of Paris. She was proceeded in death by her mother and father and her siblings Paul Franklin (brother), Barbara Jean (sister), Ruby (sister), James (brother), Robert Palmer (brother), Sam (brother) and Crimson (grandson). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Eliseia (Leelee), Jay’Dynn, Zamonii, Zi’Keria, Khori, and Christopher, one great grandchild Kha’Lena. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends whom she truly loved visiting with.
Nellies’ passing has struck us all with grief, sorrow and a since of loss. But we can all rest easy and take solace in the fact that she is not hurting or suffering anymore. We are comforted in our faith that a loving and benevolent God has received Nellie into his loving care and she is now singing in that Heavenly Choir.
