Mrs. Patricia Payne Kerney, “Aunt Tish”, was born August 25, 1938 in Union City, Tennessee to the late L. T. and Minnie Payne.
Patricia received her education from the public school system in Union City, Tennessee where she graduated from Miles High School at the top of her class. She attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. While attending Lincoln University, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her involvement in her sorority led her to becoming a social activist on and off campus. She was known for her intelligence, kindness, and willingness to always see the “BEST” in others.
Her first teaching position was with the Fulton County School System in Hickman, Kentucky at Riverview K-12, a segregated school. At the closing of Riverview, she accepted a teaching position in Missouri until she was suddenly stricken with an unforeseen illness. She was determined to beat her illness, and she did indeed fight a good fight. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 I fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me that day.
Patricia accepted Christ at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Union City, Tennessee where she attended until her illness confined her to the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Kerney; her parents, L. T. and Minnie Payne; four siblings: Alvin Payne (Eleanor), Louelia Janes (Harry), Haywood Payne and Edward T. Payne.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Lusanya Kerney Meadows (Rodney); three grandchildren: Adrian, Aundrea, and Austin Meadows, who she cherished and adored; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins
