Ruthie Jewell Ingram was born on September 9, 1951, in Obion County, Tennessee, to the late Leon Byers and the late Louvenia Minley-Douglas.
Ruthie was educated in the Obion County School System and graduated from Miles High School. Throughout her life she worked in many places, with her last place of employment being Walmart in Union City, TN. No matter where she worked, Ruthie’s kindness, laughter, and faith always touched those around her.
On June 15, 1984, Ruthie was joined in holy matrimony to James Ingram, and together they built a life of love and faith. Ruthie was a devoted and faithful member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church, where she served joyfully as a member of the Usher Board. She was also known for her gift of decorating and for sharing heartfelt poems, some that would bring laughter, others that would stir the soul and remind all who listened of the greatness of God. Her presence was a blessing and her service a testimony of her love for the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Paulette Moore, and her grandson Tareq Martin.
Ruthie leaves behind a loving family to cherish her memory: sisters Carolyn Williams (Sylvester) of Pasadena, California; Catherine Graham of Altadena, California; Anne Katherine of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Lovetta Mason (Tollie) of Clinton, Kentucky. She also leaves behind her children Trayce McFall of Union City, TN; Brian Byers (Angie) of Atlanta, Georgia; Shatina Marshall (Patrick) of Smyrna, TN; Shunda Pettigrew of Paducah, KY; and Reginald Kendre Maddox of Union City, TN, one aunt, Barbara Johnson of St. Louis, MO; and one uncle, Samuel Bunton of St. Louis, MO. She will also be remembered by her devoted best friends Doris Flakes, Deloris Hudson, and Ladon Haynes. Her memory is cherished by sisters-in-law Debra Ingram of Union City, TN, and Towanna Ingram of Murfreesboro, TN; brothers-in-law Kenneth Ingram of Dexter, MO, and Christ Ingram of Union City, TN and her godmother, Cassie Mobley of Houston, TX. Ruthie’s legacy continues through a host of grandchildren, one great-grandson, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
Ruthie’s life was a reflection of God’s light full of love, laughter, and service. Though her voice is now silent, her spirit and her poems will continue to remind us of the joy of the Lord and the beauty of a life.
