Tara Steward Corder

March 15, 1971 — December 1, 2018

Mrs.Tara Antoinette Steward Corder, 47, of Murfreesboro formerly of Union City died Saturday, December 1, 2018, at her residence.

Services will be held at noon on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

She was born on March 15, 1971, in Union City to Billy and Katie Steward.

She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Union City and Stone River Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, TN.

Tara graduated from Union City High School and Dyersburg State University and continued her education at Middle Tennessee State and Penn Foster University.

After moving to Murfreesboro, Tara joined the Rutherford County Sheriff Department in 1998. She supervised employees in the Booking Division as Corporal Sergeant before becoming the Classification Sergeant. In this role, she determined the proper housing of the inmates and recommended transfers to the Rutherford County Correctional Work Central. In September 27, 2013, Tara cemented her place in history and became the first African- American woman promoted to Lieutenant in Rutherford County. She received a Faith Award at the Ebony and Ivory Gala for this outstanding achievement and her tireless dedication to the sheriff’s department.

In addition to her father, Tara was preceded in death by her grandparents, Odie and Mary Edna Steward and George and Adell Taylor.

She is survived by her mother, Katie Steward (Union City), fiancée, Eugene Alexander (Clinton, KY), aunts Betty Hilliard ( South Fulton) Queen Steward (Union City), Addie Beckett and Debbie Covington (Murfreesboro), Almai Branch (Evansville, IN), Freddie Jackson and Gloria Williams (Detroit MI) uncles George Taylor( St. Louis, MO) Paul Steward ( Elkart, IN), Michael Steward (Union City),  a host of beloved cousins,  friends that were her sisters in Christ and many other very special friends.

The family is eternally grateful to the Rutherford County Sheriff Department for their continual support during Tara’s illness.
