Mrs. Eliza Mae Smith, 79, of Union City died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church with Rev. A.E. McCadney officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
She was born April 2, 1932, in Lauderdale County, daughter of the late Ora Jane Sanders and the late Carie Tate.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother’s Board and had been president and vice president of the missions organization. She has also been president of the nurses’ guild and had been a community baby sitter.
She was the widow of Finnie Roy Smith.
Survivors include five daughters and three sons-in-law, Linda and Ali Salaam of Nashville, Glenda Robinson and Mary Jane and Jerome McElrath, all of Union City, Cheryl and Stephon Alston of Nashville and Tracey Smith and her fiancé, Charles Stricklin, of Lincoln, Ala.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dannie and Deborah Smith and David Smith, all of Union City, and Trevor and Nikki Smith of Fulton; her stepdaughter, Rhonda Webb of St. Louis; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Henry and Wanda Tate, Gary Tate, Curtis and Sara Tate, Harold Tate and Billy Tate, all of Humboldt; three sisters and her brother-in-law, Vera and Eddie Williams, Lillie Williams and Patsy Patrick, all of Humboldt; two stepbrothers and sisters-in-law, James and Vera Sheppard and Wilbur and Lynn Sheppard, all of Humboldt; two stepsisters and brothers-in-law, Glenzell and Rochester Gooch of Humboldt and Eva and David Stewart of Toledo, Ohio; and 27 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Ora Lee Tate; her stepsister, Ora Wordlow; and her stepson, Willie Green Smith.
