Shirley Jones

March 16, 1943 — August 10, 2023

Mrs. Shirley Jones, 80, of Martin died Thursday, August 10, 2023, at her home.

Services will be held at noon on Friday, August 25, 2023, at McCabe United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Parham Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Shirley Katherine Davis-Jones was born March 16, 1942, in Martin, TN to Hurley and Katherine Davis. She was one of five children born to this union. Her parents and three brothers: Hershel (Catherine, Sister in-law), Ed, and Herbert "Bubba" preceded her in death.

Early in life she accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She received her formal education at Weakley County Training School in
Martin, TN.

On January 31, 1959, she married Gene Jones and to this union five children were born; two sons, Val and Tim, preceded her in death.
They made their home in Martin, TN. Shirley worked at Sears & Roebuck Store and Volunteer General Hospital. In 1977 they moved to St. Louis, MO. where they lived for 35 years. Shirley worked as a nurse aid at a Nursing Home. She attended Parks Chapel Methodist Church under the leadership of Pastor Smith.

In 2012, Shirley and Gene returned home to Martin. She, along with her sister in-law, Clara, became active and compassionate leaders in feeding the hungry in the community. She was involved in organizing many mobile food pantries at McCabe and very diligent in her labor of organizing and stocking McCabe's Food Pantry.

Shirley was a lover of flowers. She had a "green thumb" and a plethora of plants arranged throughout her home and outside lawn. As much as she loved her plants, she had a greater love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. "Mee-Maw" they lovingly called her as they showered her with love and affection throughout her life. Everyone in her circle could always come to trust Shirley with money, secrets, advice, and a good laugh. She was known for speaking the truth in love. If you didn't want the truth, then you shouldn't be in her presence. Her famous saying was ''If you can Huh-me, you can hear me. "

She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory: her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Gene Jones, son: James Roderick "Ricky"(Patricia), 2 daughters: LaJill and Ifonda "Cookie" all of Martin. A loving sister: Linda Davis of Martin, TN., 4-Sister In-laws: Barbara Jean Davis of Martin, Bennie Davis of Detroit, MI., Kathy Vincent of Martin, TN. Robbie Sue Young, Nashville, TN. A Love Sister: Mattie Edwards, Martin, TN.; a brother In-law: James Hamilton, Sr. of Martin. 3-Grandchildren: Derwin "Dee-Dee" and David (preceded her in death), James Roderick, Jr. "JR", Ciara, and Sherrell. 14-Great-Grandchildren: Amaya, Jaxon, JR III "Fat", JR IV, Jahrae, Camille, Amiyah, Jaliyah, Aonyae, Glen, Gionna, Curtis, David Jr. and Kennedy. Adoptive Children: Brenda Alexander of St. Louis, MO., James & Geraldine Holmes of Martin, TN and Dwight & Deborah Moffitt of Union City, TN; Dear Friends: Jack & Edna Thomas of St. Louis, MO. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
