Mrs. Bettye Hilliard, 85, of South Fulton died Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Bettye Louis Steward Hilliard was born on July 20, 1939, in Rives, Tennessee to the late Odie Louis and Mary Edna Steward. Bettye married the late Leonard “Mr. Flop” Hilliard on September 15, 1963, and began a family with him.
Bettye graduated in 1957 from Miles High. She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin studying in the nursing program. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, serving in various capacities. Bettye served as a member of the choir, church clerk, and kitchen committee. She also served as the Assistant Secretary of the Obion County River District. Bettye was a hard worker. She held employment at H.I.S., Northwest, and Old National Bank. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards and board games, but most of all she had to have her coffee and Coca-Cola. Bettye lived a life focused on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all with equal love, always encouraging and supportive.
Bettye leaves to cherish her wonderful memories: one son, Reginald Maddox (Lisa); one daughter, Renette Huggins; two brothers, Paul Steward (Joy) of Elkhart, IN and Michael Steward of Union City, TN; one sister, Queen Steward of Union City, TN; two sisters-in-law, Katie Steward of Union City, TN and Ruthie Morris of South Fulton, TN; one grandson, Reginald Kendrae Maddox; three granddaughters, Regginette Maddox, Bretta Hilliard (Jeffrey), and Dericka Bellamy; ten great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of thirty-four years, Leonard “Mr. Flop” Hilliard; one brother, Billy Joe Steward ; one nephew, Patrick Steward; two nieces, Michelle Caldwell and Tara Corder ; one son-in-law Michael Huggins .
